| Management Reporter vs.
FRx vs. Other - Our Opinion |
Microsoft has removed
FRx from the market. This move
impacts not only users of Dynamics software
but also users of MAS 90, Lawson or any of the
many other
accounting software packages which rely on FRx as the
Financial Statement report writer.
The following is a copy of statements from
Microsoft:
"Effective March
1, 2011, Microsoft FRx sales will no longer
be available. Management Reporter will be
the only option for Microsoft Dynamics GP
customer’s financial reporting needs.
Customers registered for Microsoft FRx prior
to March 1, 2011 may continue to use
Microsoft FRx, but will no longer be able to
purchase additional users. Microsoft FRx
will continue to be supported through the
Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 product
lifecycle, mainstream support ending
10/9/2012 and extended support ending
10/10/2017."
"Microsoft FRx 6.7
is not supported on a 64-bit version of
Windows. Some parts of FRx 6.7 may work on
64-bit Windows because of the 32-bit
compatibility layer (WoW64). However, this
environment is not tested or supported. FRx
6.7 service pack 11 or later versions is
compatible with Windows 7 and Windows Server
2008, but only with the 32-bit versions. Our
recommendation is to install FRx 6.7 on a
32-bit version of Windows (client and
server)."
So where does this leave you?
That depends on the accounting software you
are using. In the Dynamics GP
world, you will be supported through the
support life of Version 10.
But sometime between now and October 2012,
you will need to make a decision.
Why did Microsoft replace FRx with
Management Reporter? It is our opinion
that it was too much investment to fully
move FRx into the 64bit operating systems.
Management Reporter also reflects a trend to
rely more and more on the Microsoft sever
stack.
FRx is much more feature rich and functional
than Management Reporter, making it
preferred for the accounting staff and
distribution of financial reports.
Management Reporter will be hailed by your
IT staff as being much easier to support.
So far, the clients we have shown Management
Report to have elected to remain on FRx
until something better is available.
